Woking Dance Festival is an outstanding contributor to the arts and culture in Woking, and the South East of England, with a national and international reputation for the quality of its work.
We present festivals of international dance, commission and premiere new work and provide local people with opportunities to engage in our creative learning and participation projects. Established in 1995, the dance festival is the largest in the South East region (outside of London).
Recent events include:
- Summer 2010: BIG Dance South East
- Spring 2010: 8th Edition International Dance Festival
Woking Dance Festival receives regular funding from Arts Council England and Woking Borough Council.
Woking Dance Festival committed to getting Surrey dancing as part of Big Dance South East 2010.
What did we do?
We teamed up with StopGAP Dance Company to present a brand new participatory dance performance which took place at The Lightbox gallery and musuem, Woking on Saturday 10 July.
We delivered 16 FREE dance workshops to schools across Surrey, which led to more than 1300 young people taking part in the Big Dance Schools Pledge; a national initiative set up to get schools across England to partake in 20 minutes additional dance activity during the Big Dance week.
As a build up to our finale event on 10th July both Woking and Guildford town centres were bought to life by a series of participatory dance performances from StopGAP Dance Comapny. Over 500 members of the public watched and joined in StopGAP's human dance tombola, picking 'a dance' out of a bucket before joining in with the company themselves.
Photographs from these events can be found on our Facebook and Flickr pages.
