Celebrating rising black & asian talent from Africa and the UK

An exclusive evening of breath-taking international contemporary dance, featuring work from five hot young choreographers and twelve stunning dancers, comes to the Rhoda McGaw Theatre for one night only. Bringing together artists from black and Asian backgrounds, International Shorts delivers an awe-inspiring mix of dance styles and influences featuring specially commissioned music and a jazz trio LIVE on stage.

Artists include: Saju Hari (currently working with Akram Khan and formerly Shobana Jeyasingh), presenting his new trio ‘Outside In’ commissioned by the Royal Opera House, ROH2; Laila Diallo (formerly Random Dance Company); Temitope Ajose Cutting (Bonnie Bird Choreography Award winner); and from Kenya, James Mweu and Kebaya Moturi, who returns following his sell-out performance at Woking International Dance Festival 2007.

'... the wondrously named and gloriously coltish Temitope Ajose Cutting - taking the lead in her own spirited girl-power workout. The piece was packed with engaging incident, neatly brought off. The sprung-heeled quintet leapt and strode and dodged in chic black frocks like synchronised blackbirds assembling on a wire. They also used the frocks' sculptural cut to intriguing effect, ducking inside a high neckline, or stretching against the grain. Added interest came form a 3-piece band whose unwavering eye contact with the dancers created a superb impression of spontaneity - an example of how live music can genuinely enliven dance.'
