Three stories from South Indian traditions
of classical dance, dance/drama and folk dances are woven together
into a colourful and dramatic performance by SANKALPAM. Performed
by 5 dancers and two live musicians, PSYCHE – the modern
self, explores stories of longing and expectation, drawing on classical
south Indian texts, and presenting them through a unique blend
of bharata natyam dance, live music and visuals.
Accompanied by the rich rhythms of the mridangam drum and a special
music arrangement by Ashley Slater, the dancers evoke the characters,
and moods of South Indian story telling, while preserving the beauty
and dynamism of classical bharata natyam dance.
Psyche – the modern self celebrates the 10th anniversary of
Sankalpam – one of UK's outstanding South Asian dance companies.
It will bring together performers from Chennai (Madras) and the
UK, who all trained at the world famous Kalakshetra School in Chennai.
There will be a post
show talk and an opportunity to meet the dancers after
the performance.
Schools workshops led by Sankalpam will be available
alongside this performance. If you are interested in
